Gunlock / Goldstrike Loop

Trail Description

Sponsor:

The Gunlock / Goldstrike Loop is a popular ride on the Tri-State ATV Jamboree. The ride starts north of Gunlock and heads up into the mountains through pinyon-juniper woodlands, past Mineral Mountain, down the Beaver Dam Wash near Motoqua, and then up past East Fork to Hamburg Peak and the site of the Goldstrike Mine.

The Goldstrike Mine produced 200,000 ounces of gold between 1989 and 1997. By 1998 the buildings, equipment, ponds, and heaps were removed. A smaller amount of silver was also mined.

Just north of the Goldstrike Mine on Padre Hill is where the Gunlock Meteorite was discovered in 1982. The football sized meteorite is one of only 18 known meteorites discovered in Utah, and is quite valuable. The meteorite was discovered in two fragments found 150 feet apart that fit back together to form the complete meteorite. The meteorite is now on display at the Natural Resources Map & Bookstore in Salt Lake City, Utah.

There are a lot of ATV trails in this area, so it helps to have a good map, or the nearby trails loaded into your GPS. There is a lot to see out here and you could easily spend days exploring between Gunlock and Enterprise Reservoir (10 miles north, as the crow flies).

A couple miles after the mine you rejoin your previous tracks to finish out the loop.

The Gunlock / Goldstrike Loop is a good winter ride when it is too cold and snowy to ride most places, and can get very hot and dusty in the summer.

We did this loop clockwise wich ended up being nice because we were able to do the only real steep section going uphill. Most of the ride is on well maintained roads so watch out for vehicles. Nice views. Thanks for the GPS track as there are a lot of intersecting trails and roads.

I've been on this ride a number of times, with large groups on a Jamboree or just a couple of friends. It's a wide open area with lots to see, and its fun to stop at the mine. I didn't realize the mine was so recent and always assumed it was from a long time ago.

This is a big area with a lot of trails going every direction. I downloaded all of the nearby trails into my GPS (using the premium member feature) and it really helped.

I've seen large groups of deer on this ride, as well as wild turkeys.

This is a good ride to do in the fall, winter, or spring. In the summer it gets pretty dusty and hot, but is still doable (just be prepared).
